From March 27th to April 5th, 2015 a group of student ambassadors from metropolitan New York City met with students in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan for a ten-day International Youth Leadership Workshop.
The focus of the workshop was to create and expand awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons; teach empathy, compassion and communication skills to youth from different cultures; and give the participants a chance to express their newfound connection and understanding through art.
Possessing a genuine desire to make exciting new connections with peers from foreign countries, the students engaged in an intensive workshop organized by top professionals in education, peace mediation and art, as well as lectures from a few of the last remaining survivors of the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
The students and faculty made the most of a once in a lifetime opportunity. But don’t take our word for it. View the above slideshow to see what last year’s participants had to say about the 2015 IYLW.

Free Minds, Free People was exciting because most of the conferences I go to are dominated by white people, mostly white men with gray hair. Far as I could tell, I was the only gray-haired white man at this conference. In fact, I was at least 10 years older than the next oldest person and 30 years older than most of the radical, free-thinking, education-minded educators in beautiful, cool-yet-warm attendance. Never have I seen a conference of 1200 people with more diversity of shapes, sizes, colors, cultures, and genders more united in philosophy and approach to life.

This youth expedition consisted of 12 individuals age 18-25. The participants were from the U.S, Japan, and the European states. The program ran from 20 April 2018 to 25 April 2018.
The 2018 NPT Prepcom was held in Geneva, Switzerland from 23 April 2018 to 4 May 2018. The Chair-designate of the second session was Ambassador Adam Bugajski of Poland. This meeting served as the 2nd PrepCom for the 2020 Meeting of the States Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. At the NPT PrepCom, there was a focus on the states parties to the NPT's commitments to nuclear disarmament. However, the nuclear weapon states (US, UK, Russia, France, and China) have refused to comply with their obligations. The parties also addressed the impact of the new U.S. nuclear posture on the nuclear nonproliferation regime. The parties engaged in substantive discussions on the relationship between the Ban Treaty and the NPT.
Activities:
Participants monitored plenary discussions, met with diplomats and presented a youth presentation. To prepare for the meetings with diplomats, they were expected to write background profiles about the relevant states. Participants collaborated with other youth groups and NGO leaders to draft the youth presentation. Additionally, they were expected to maintain a blog about the PrepCom and live tweet the discussions.
Meetings with Diplomats:
Participants engaged with diplomats to hear first-hand the strategies and obstacles in their approaches to nuclear disarmament and the NPT.
Youth Speech:
Participants developed a youth presentation and delivered it to the General Assembly during the NGO session.
